Whether it's high-altitude hiking, climbing, or even a barbecue in the woods, you need clothing you can rely on in any weather. At DIRECT ALPINE, we know this well - that’s why we rigorously test our selected materials and products.
When the Lab Speaks the Language of Nature
Before DIRECT ALPINE outdoor jackets or pants reach you, their materials undergo rigorous laboratory tests simulating extreme conditions you might encounter.
You might think a lab is miles away from mountain trails, but the reality is quite the opposite. The laboratories of the Faculty of Textile Engineering at the Technical University of Liberec are where we test the key properties of our outdoor apparel, including abrasion resistance, pilling, breathability, and thermal insulation.
Abrasion and Pilling Resistance Testing
Key aspects influencing the functionality, quality, and durability of materials are tested for abrasion resistance and pilling.
Outdoor clothing is often exposed to demanding conditions, such as friction from backpacks or natural surfaces. That’s why ensuring longevity without losing functionality or risking tears is crucial.
Aesthetics also play a role - pilling can significantly worsen the look of a garment, making it appear worn out. However, excessive pilling doesn’t just affect appearance; it also impacts material performance, including water resistance, breathability, and wind resistance. This ultimately reduces your comfort and the effectiveness of the clothing in the field.
Water Resistance Test
Selected models of outdoor jackets (DEAMON, GUIDE, TALUNG LADY) and pants (CYCLONE PANTS, DEAMON PANTS, EIGER) undergo rigorous tests to verify their ability to protect you, even in heavy rain.
Water resistance is measured by the water column height, a parameter that determines how long a material can prevent water from seeping through. In other words, how long you stay dry before you feel moisture.
The higher the water column value, the better the protection. This is a crucial factor, especially for activities in rainy or humid environments, where staying dry can be essential not just for comfort but for safety as well.
Breathability Test
Another essential test for outdoor apparel materials is breathability measurement, which determines how well a fabric allows moisture to escape. This factor is crucial during active movement - whether hiking, running, or climbing - when your body naturally produces sweat. If a fabric isn’t breathable enough, moisture builds up on your skin, leading to discomfort and significantly reducing thermal comfort.
On the other hand, breathable materials effectively wick away sweat and maintain a dry microclimate between your skin and clothing layers, ensuring comfort even during prolonged physical activity or challenging conditions.
Testing Through Our Ambassadors
Laboratory tests are only half the story. At DIRECT ALPINE, we collaborate with professionals such as mountain guides, mountain rescue team members, and elite athletes who push their gear to the limits.
